Recently, I've been doing a lot of game research due to some ideas I've been having. I tried to think of a different look for one of my games and for some reason, Yoshi's Island was the first thing that came to my mind. I've been thinking about it a lot this week and this ended up on paper pretty quickly.
I loved the look of that game. Everything looked like sketches. I actually used to draw Yoshi comics somewhere between primary and secondary school (though our system is different with ages...) They were actually pretty long, and the story was more or less "Something happened! Fight the bad guys while getting from A to B!" In other words, horrible. Now, I find it understandeble that I stopped drawing Yoshi ages ago. It wasn't like with Mario (who's facial proportians still baffle me) that I simply couldn't draw him. Nope, Yoshi was just... boring.
However! The look they made for him before the "new" 3D Yoshi came along gave me the opportunity to test out this style. The way everything lookes messy and hand-drawn or painted, it's really fun to work with. Probably won't do any more comics though, I have a little pride left yet.
Oh, and if you're wondering: The mouths on the small Yoshi's supposed to be bent like that. I kind of did a mix of Yoshi's Island art and Super Mario World. There were no baby Yoshi's in Island so I looked at a bunch of official art from World and the small ones had crooked mouths. I'm guessing they would step away from the flat nosed look they had if they had made an update of them.
Hahaha, what did they have before this? They look absolutely wasted!
I thought baby-yoshis had more pointy noses and ate stuff to grow. And then you could sit on them. That is providing "you" are Mario...
Was this a quickie?

"There were no baby Yoshi's in Island so I looked at a bunch of official art from World and the small ones had crooked mouths. I'm guessing they would step away from the flat nosed look they had if they had made an update of them." That explains one of your questions.
Well of course they look waisted. For one thing, Yoshis allways have their eyes like that. (at least, unless they're in anything but hardcore happy mode.) but the real reason is because they live with Gusties everywhere. Remember the flying hairballs that made Yoshi drugged? That's why. Thease guy's must have had a serious dose (Or maybe I just made them like that, who knows?)
Yes, this was a quicky. Took 3 days, but that was one for the lineart (a few minutes) one for the colour and another one to submitt. Takes a while when you're at school untill around 5 or 8.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
